Historic
Muckross House
Killarney National Park - Ireland
Located in
Ireland's Killarney National Park, near Muckross Lake, the historic
Muckross House was designed by Scottish architect William Burn, and was
built for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, Mary Balfour Herbert who
was a watercolor artist. Boasting 65 rooms, the Tudor-style House took
four years to build - starting in 1839. Preparing for the visit of Queen
Victoria, in 1861, the Herberts made major improvements to the estate.
In fact, it has been said that this was one of the biggest reasons the
Herberts battled financially, which eventually led to the sale of the
estate.
The house,
gardens and traditional farms are all open to the public with guided
tours of the Muckross House. Learn more at
